For Jesse Platt, Thanksgiving weekend of 2022 was supposed to be a time for family gatherings and celebrations, but instead, it brought an unexpected and daunting diagnosis: colon cancer. Despite the shocking news, there was an immediate and unwavering determination to conquer this challenge. "This is beatable, and I am going to beat it" became the guiding mantra.
Jesse initially reacted with a mix of fear and uncertainty. The diagnosis shook the family, but amidst the fear, there was an outpouring of support. Everyone rallied together, ready to face the battle head-on.
The treatment journey was arduous, marked by at least twelve different surgeries and countless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Each day presented its own set of challenges, from managing the side effects of treatment to the logistical nightmare of scheduling appointments and surgeries. But Jesse took each day as it came, focusing on one step at a time.
Support from family became the cornerstone of this journey. There was never a lack of anything—whether it was help with daily activities or moral support. His devoted wife, Carolyn, emerged as the primary caregiver, coordinator, and lifesaver. Her unwavering dedication and love made all the difference. The roles within the family shifted, with Carolyn stepping up as the primary breadwinner and manager of the household, allowing Jesse to focus solely on healing.
Coping emotionally with such a diagnosis is a monumental task. For someone not prone to expressing emotions, Jesse's approach was direct and included unwavering trust in God. Faith became a source of strength, providing the mental fortitude needed to navigate the tough days. The family, too, leaned on each other, breaking down the overwhelming journey into smaller, more manageable goals.
The cancer diagnosis significantly altered the family dynamics. Responsibilities shifted, and humility became essential as Jesse stepped back from work to focus on recovery. Jesse's older children, who are now grown, initially struggled to grasp the gravity of the situation, while Calvin (6) and Acadia (3) only understand that their daddy is sick. Yet despite these challenges, the family has not just adapted, but thrived, and their relationships are stronger than ever.
Family and friends surround the Platt family, playing a vital role by providing both moral and everyday assistance. From every day notes of encouragement to bringing meals to help during hay season to filling the barn for the horses, they are overwhelmed by the generosity of their community. These gestures of love and support were invaluable.
As Jesse reflects on the journey, he has no regrets. His advice for others facing similar battles is simple yet profound: find a support group that genuinely helps. The experience reinforced the importance of a strong relationship with God and the value of family.
"Getting right with God is the most important decision you can make," Jesse said. "The love, support, and comfort he provides helps me keep my mental fortitude during this journey. Knowing that he is fighting on my side helps me get through the day-to-day pain and negative thoughts. Even if he chooses not to heal me, I know I have a place to go."
The family is doing well today, finding a lull in the storm between chemotherapy treatments. They are not just enduring, but looking forward to the future, with plans for camping trips and a visit to Mackinaw. Small, achievable goals provide something to look forward to and celebrate, instilling a sense of hope.
The journey through cancer has been one of immense challenges, but it has also been a journey of love, faith, and perseverance. With unwavering family support and a steadfast belief in God's plan, there is hope and strength to face whatever comes next. The love and resilience shown by Carolyn and the rest of the family are a testament to the power of unity and faith in overcoming life's greatest trials.
